About me and this site

Hello, I’m Sophie. This site has been created to group together all my favourite recipes and to share these with my family and friends. I’m an escapee banking lawyer having a one-third (or so)-life crisis and rediscovering myself by cooking through it. I have a keen passion for all things food and travel related, with a particular focus on healthy(-ish), whole food eating. My favourite pastimes include sharing a good meal with friends, travelling, being outdoors and planning the next adventure.

I’m not vegetarian, although this site predominantly focusses on whole food, plant-based recipes, and we largely eat this way.  The change in eating habits to a plant-based diet was sparked after watching the Forks over Knives documentary on a plane trip on Boxing Day 2012; we decided to trial a different, healthier eating plan for a couple of months, starting New Years Day, consisting of no animal products and no alcohol.

Although not a heavy meat eater, I found the first few days of this new lifestyle fairly tough, having previously consumed several kilos of cheese and yoghurt a week. After spending many hours of valuable work time scouring the internet for suitable recipes, I developed a newfound respect for vegetarian and vegan chefs, who produced delicious meals without relying on cheese, cream, butter, eggs and the like.

This opened my eyes to a whole new world of plant-based wholefood cooking, using local, seasonal and unprocessed fruit, vegetables, grains, legumes, fermented products, nuts and dairy. As with all good resolutions formed in the New Year, we began eating dairy (and less frequently fish and meat) again, however my interest had been piqued on the sustainability, environmental and general health aspects of this way of eating.  This continues to drive the way we eat, and I enjoy learning more about this area, and trying to consciously make changes to improve.  Michael Pollan couldn’t have said it better:

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants
